You were either limited to using it as a wired device, or you needed a special dongle that allowed the controller to connect wirelessly. Nowadays, Xbox controllers utilize Bluetooth technology to connect to your devices, allowing you to pair them with any Bluetooth-enabled computer.

players can disable their controllers by accessing a menu on the Xbox console.
How to Turn Off an Xbox Controller Connected to a PC Via Bluetooth
You have two options for turning off your Xbox controller when it is connected to your PC via Bluetooth. You can either press and hold the power button on the controller for three seconds, or you can disconnect the controller from the PC.
Option 1: Remove the Batteries
To turn off your Xbox controller, simply remove the batteries. In order to turn off the controller, simply slide off the battery cover on the back and pop out one of the batteries.
One way to turn off the controller is to simply disconnect it from the power source. However, this is not the most ideal method as it can lead to data loss or controller malfunction.
The battery cover on many devices is designed to be removed in order to access the battery. However, over time the process of removing and replacing the battery cover can cause wear and tear on the clips that are meant to keep the cover in place.
This may eventually lead to the need for the cover to be replaced. we understand that it’s sometimes difficult to pop out the batteries on our controllers.
The plastic cases sometimes stick or even break, but we don’t necessarily have to power down our controllers anyway so it wouldn’t really be an issue.
Option 2: Press and hold the Xbox Guide Button
The alternative solution is to just hold the Xbox guide button down to turn off the controller. To power it on, you can turn it back on with a simple tap. Just press and hold the Start and Guide buttons at the same time. It’s that easy!
Make sure you hold the button down for at least 6 seconds because if not, the controller will act funny. To turn it back on, all you have to do is re-pair it with the program on your PC.
There is also a guide button on their controller that can help you with any of the issues above. To start, you will want to press this guide button for around 15 seconds. The Guide button is typically located near the center of the Xbox One’s controller and will flash while being held down.
